Presbyond

Presbyond is a sophisticated laser technique to treat patients with Presbyopia

Presbyopia is the age-related loss of near vision that usually begins to manifest in individuals in their 40s. It occurs because the eye’s natural lens loses elasticity, making it harder to focus on close objects.

Traditionally, reading glasses were used to correct this condition, but advances in laser vision correction have introduced a permanent solution called Presbyond which works on the principle of Laser Blended Vision, a type of laser refractive surgery developed by Carl Zeiss. Presbyond is a refinement of the Femto LASIK platform, designed specifically to treat presbyopia. It enhances visual acuity for both distance and near vision by leveraging the eye’s natural ability to blend different focal ranges.

How Presbyond works

Presbyond focuses on both distance and near vision correction. The procedure works by subtly modifying the shape of the cornea to extend the depth of field in each eye. Unlike traditional LASIK, Presbyond creates a “blend zone” where the depth of focus in each eye overlaps, resulting in a smoother transition between distance and near vision. This is often referred to as Laser Blended Vision, and it reduces the trade-offs typically associated with monovision, giving patients functional vision across a range of distances.

A thorough assessment will be carried out to evaluate whether the patient is a suitable candidate for Presbyond. This includes standard eye tests as well as additional tests to assess corneal thickness, refractive error, and general eye health. The analysis will also determine the dominant and non-dominant eye to ensure proper correction for distance and near vision.

A femtosecond laser creates a thin corneal flap, which is lifted to allow the excimer laser to reshape the cornea. This reshaping adjusts the focal points for both distance and near vision. Instead of fully correcting the non-dominant eye for near vision, a mild correction is applied, creating an extended depth of field in both eyes. This allows the brain to combine the visual information from both eyes to give a seamless transition from near-to-distance vision. The "Blend Zone" is the key innovation in Presbyond. This zone is achieved by increasing the depth of field in both the dominant and non-dominant eyes, allowing both eyes to share the task of focusing at all distances. By carefully optimizing the laser ablation profile, the surgeon creates a smooth gradation between the two focal points. Most patients experience improvements in their vision within the first few days, though it can take upto 6 weeks for the brain to fully adapt to blended vision.

Presbyond Laser Blended Vision represents a significant advancement in the treatment of presbyopia. By optimizing the corneal shape to provide a more seamless transition between distance and near vision, it offers an effective alternative to traditional monovision LASIK. Most patients enjoy freedom from reading glasses and report high satisfaction with the results, making it an attractive option for individuals seeking a long-term solution to presbyopia.

Eye Doctor Undergoes Presbyond LASIK For Spectacle Power Removal

There is no better feedback on laser vision correction that one can get than from an ophthalmologist who had the procedure done on themselves....

Our experience with Presbyond

Uma Eye Clinic is proud to first introduce Presbyond in Tamil Nadu. Numerous patients have undergone the procedure with extra ordinary results. Considering it to be a day care procedure, patients return to work the very next day after the procedure.

Binocular Post Operative near vision

All patients following the procedure achieve normal or better than normal amount of visual clarity for distance, intermittent distance vision and near vision. There was no difficulty noticed for any activity including night driving, sports activities, performing surgeries (for doctors who have undergone Presbyond) or for reading or performing near vision activities.
